Green Beans
Climbing or dwarf, beans are one of the most reliable and least fussy vegetables to grow.
Get your planting dates
This guide covers how to grow, harvest and keep green beans, deliberately without sowing dates,
because the right date depends entirely on your climate zone. GardenBuddy's planting calendar
covers all seven Australian climate zones and will tell you exactly when to sow where you live.
Growing
Full sun, moderate water, and average soil, beans fix their own nitrogen so don't over-fertilise. Climbing types need a trellis from the start.
Common problems
- Rust on leaves in humid weather, improve airflow
- Bean fly on young seedlings in warmer regions
- Poor pod set in extreme heat
Harvest
Pick while pods are still slim and snap cleanly. Regular picking keeps the plant producing, letting pods mature to full size signals the plant to stop.

Seed saving
Difficulty: Easy. Self-pollinating and rarely crosses. Leave a portion of pods on the plant until they dry and rattle, then shell and store.
