Seed Viability Reference
How long properly stored seed stays worth planting, by crop. Figures assume cool, dark, dry storage, an airtight container in the fridge extends most of these further.
| Crop | Typical viable storage life |
|---|---|
| Tomato | 4-6 years |
| Capsicum & Chilli | 2-3 years |
| Cucumber | 5-6 years |
| Zucchini & Pumpkin | 4-5 years |
| Green Beans | 3-4 years |
| Peas | 3 years |
| Lettuce & Salad Greens | 2-3 years |
| Silverbeet & Spinach | 3-4 years |
| Kale | 3-4 years |
| Carrot | 2-3 years |
| Beetroot | 2-4 years |
| Onion & Garlic (onion seed) | 1-2 years |
| Broccoli & Cauliflower | 3-4 years |
| Cabbage | 3-4 years |
| Sweet Corn | 1-2 years |
| Basil | 3-5 years |
| Coriander, Parsley & Dill | 2-3 years |
These are general reference ranges, not guarantees, actual viability depends heavily on how the seed was dried and stored. When in doubt, do a quick germination test on a damp paper towel before relying on older seed for a full sowing.
